There’s no doubt that buying organic is a good idea. The more food you eat that isn’t covered in pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals, the better. However, it can be expensive.
If you have to pick and choose the best foods to buy organic, where should you start? Not all organic and non-organic food is created equal. If you have only limited opportunity for organic food, we recommend choosing these foods first.
Beef is one of the most important proteins you can buy organic. Research suggests that there is a strong correlation between the hormones given to cattle and cancer in humans. Specifically, you want to avoid the aestrogen-like chemicals given to cattle. When you buy beef that is certified organic, not only do you cut back on the hormones, you’re also cutting back on the massive amounts of antibiotics that cows receive, which can cause antibiotic resistance in some people. Look out for grass fed rather than grain too.
If you love putting fresh berries on your muesli in the morning, you’re not alone. However, if you’re not choosing organic strawberries, you could be filling your stomach with 13 pesticides. Strawberries have a large surface area with a lot of little bumps, which can make them difficult to clean. They’re best when they’re purchased organically, particularly since you can’t remove the skin.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away but only if it’s organic. 99% of apples that have been tested were found to contain at least one pesticide residue. Apples are a great source of fibre and vitamins, but organic is the way to go—this goes for applesauce and apple juice, too.
If you’re not lactose intolerant, then you need to be purchasing organic milk, cheese, and yoghurt. Certified organic dairy saves you from the same hormones and antibiotics that are found in beef. Even better, take the next step and purchase organic, grass-fed milk so you know you’re getting the most nutrients.
Celery is a great source of fibre, vitamin C, and B vitamins. However, celery has been found to contain 64 different types of pesticides. If you can’t find organic, choose to enjoy asparagus, instead. Asparagus is at the top of the clean produce list, so it’s a much safer choice.
About 90% of the corn you find in today’s market is genetically modified. In fact, even the corn you find in sweeteners, oils, and starches is packed with GMOSs and pesticides. Try to buy organic whenever you can or choose sweet corn. Sweet corn, which is typically found on the cob, is rarely genetically modified and is much healthier.
There are countless other foods that you should purchase organically when you can. We’ve listed a few more of the most important choices below:
- Hot Peppers
- Leafy Greens (lettuce, collards, kale)
- Snap Peas
